Removing Your Wisdom Teeth? Know What You Should Expect

Has your dentist informed you that you have wisdom teeth that need to be removed? This form of oral surgery can be a bit worrisome when you do not know what to expect. Here are some things that you need to know about the procedure.

You Have Options For Dental Sedation

Your dentist will give you the option of what kind of dental sedation you want for the tooth extraction procedure. You can use a form of sedation that will keep you awake during the procedure or one that will completely put you to sleep so that you do not remember anything about what is happening to you. This is all a personal preference that will depend on your comfort level with each form of dental sedation.

One thing to keep in mind is that your dentist may be capable of performing a wisdom tooth extraction when using nitrous oxide and other forms of sedation that keep you awake. However, they may recommend that you visit an oral surgeon for any type of twilight sedation where you are asleep.

You Will Be Numb For The Procedure

You will always be given a form of local anesthesia for the extraction procedure, even when you are using a form of sedation that puts you to sleep. This is because it does require opening up your jawbone to expose the wisdom teeth, which can be quite invasive to do.

Your Tooth May Be Removed In Pieces

Part of extracting a wisdom tooth that is impacted means that it cannot be pulled using traditional means. Expect your dentist to actually take the tooth out in small pieces if necessary to ensure that the procedure goes smoothly for you. This will help avoid causing structural damage to all of the surrounding tissue and bone in your mouth.

You Will Need Assistance Getting To And From The Dentist

If you are using a form of dental sedation that will leave you unable to drive a car, then driving yourself is not an option. You will need to prepare for your method of transportation getting to the dentist, and arrange for them to drive you home as well. If not, you could be waiting at the dentist's office for a very long time for you to be completely recovered from the sedation.
