Review of Dental Health

On your first visit, the dentist will start by reviewing your dental health. The dentist will want to know whether you have had dental ailments in the past, treatments, and any medications you received.

The dentist will examine your teeth for chips and cracks. They will also check for cavities by identifying spots where teeth enamel has softened. They will also check the gums for swelling and sores. The dentist will check for gum recession and deepened pockets.

The dentist will also check the jaw by examining your bite. The pattern of your bite can show problems, like an occlusion. They will also check for jaw clenching and teeth grinding issues.

Deep Cleaning

A visit to a general dentist should ideally include a deep cleaning session. The dentist uses special tools to scrape off food debris stuck on your teeth, called plaque. When this plaque has hardened, it is called tartar, and it presents a high risk for gum disease.

Deep cleaning at the dental office also includes flossing and brushing with an electric toothbrush. The dentist will finish by applying a fine fluoride coat to help restore your teeth enamel. Fluoride is especially helpful for children because their teeth are still developing and are more prone to cavities. 

X-ray Imaging

The dentist may require an X-ray image if the examination brings up an anomaly. The x-ray image will show the underlying teeth and jawbone structure, including any forming cavities. The x-ray image is only necessary when the dentist wants to confirm or disprove certain theories.

Oral Cancer Screening

It is crucial to arrest oral cancers very early, which gives ample time for remedial measures. A general dentist can screen for cancer by looking for early signs on your tongue, mouth, neck, and jaws.  If there are signs, the dentist will refer the case to a specialist.
